If you've always wanted to learn how to shoot a gun and have
never known where to begin, this is the place. You may come to this course
afraid or even suspicious of guns but you will leave intimately familiar and
ready to purchase your first pistol.
This eight hour
course is an introduction to firearm ownership in all its aspects. You do not
need to own a gun to take this course.
In the classroom
lecture (four hours) you will learn:
| * | the basic pistol parts and operation, |
| * | safe firearm handling, |
| * | range safety rules, |
| * | the Weaver grip and its advantages, |
| * | ammunition and its function, |
| * | pistol cleaning and care, |
| * | safe weapons storage, |
| * | legal aspects of owning, transporting and using a firearm in self defense, |
| * | equipment such as holsters, magazine pouches, and ear and eye protection, and |
| * | basic tactics of self-defense. |
In hands-on training on the
range (four hours) you will learn:
| * | proper stance and grip, |
| * | loading and unloading a pistol, |
| * | tactical reload, |
| * | proper sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control, and |
| * | live firing. |
This course includes all training and tests legally required to
purchase and own a firearm.
Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC)
The State requires
handgun buyers to pass a basic firearms safety test, unless you have an
exemption. After successfully passing this test, you are issued a HSC card,
which entitles you to purchase handguns. The cost of this card is $25 (not
included in the course fee). This common sense, 30-question test can be taken at
any time.
Course Requirements:
| * | Handgun you want to train with (if you don't own one, you can rent a gun for $35 for the day). |
| * | Eye and ear protection (if you don't own these items, they can be rented for $6 for the day). |
| * | Holster (if you don't own one you can rent it). |
| * | Minimum of 150 rounds of ammunition (common calibers will be available for purchase). |
